Petition to Save Ushaw Seminary

Leo Darroch, President of Una Voce International and Paul Waddington, treasurer of the LMS and arranger of Priest-Training Courses in the Traditional Rite, have been very active in trying to set up a business plan to save Ushaw College which the Trustees (bishops) are dismissing, seemingly being intent on selling off the mighty, historic College Seminary. Leo has set up a petition which we are invited to sign as part of a clear groundswell of support to save the Seminary. Please add your name; the website is:

Midnight Mass St. Joseph's Burslem

The sung Midnight Mass at St. Joseph's, Hall St., Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent will be preceded by a Carol Service including meditations. This will commence at 11.15 p.m., Christmas Eve. This is probably the first Mass in the Traditional Rite actually at Midnight in the region for many years.

Wednesday 15 December 2010

Low Mass 19 Dec. Stoke-on-Trent

Fr. Tynan has arranged to celebrate a Low Mass at a 'new' venue: 3 p.m. this Sunday 19 Dec. at Our Lady of the Angels and St. Peter in Chains, Hartshill Road, Stoke-on-Trent (very distinctive church on right-hand side up the hill out of Stoke).

This is probably a 'one-off', though Fr. Tynan hopes to arrange Low Masses on Sundays at 3 pm once a month at Stone (St. Dominic's, second Sunday) and Cheadle (St. Giles, third Sunday). His contact number is 01782-312704).

Wednesday 1 December 2010

Low Mass Change

There will be a Low Mass at St. Dominic's, Stone at 3 p.m. on 12th. December. This is, as it were, a replacement for the 19 Dec. Mass at Cheadle which is cancelled.

There should be Masses each second Sunday at St. Dominic's, Stone and each third Sunday at St. Giles, Cheadle, in the coming year, both at 3 pm. These will be arranged by Fr. Tynan (01728-312704).

Sunday 28 November 2010

Last Minute Cancellation

Today's Mass at Cheadle has had to be cancelled due to the bad weather conditions. The 6pm Mass at Burslem will still go ahead.

Wednesday 17 November 2010

Christmas Mass Confirmed

There will be a midnight Mass for Christmas Day at St. Joseph's, Burslem. This may be a Missa Cantata or, if additional singers can be found, a Solemn High Mass. There will be Christmas carols from 11.30.

Ushaw College Closure

Below is a message from Leo Darroch, president of the International Federation Una Voce.

MESSAGE

This is to let everyone know about the current publicity on Fr Brown’s blog about the possible closure of Ushaw College.

http://forestmurmurs.blogspot.com/2010/11/modern-seminary.html.

Paul Waddington is leading the fight to save Ushaw and this is just a request to give as much publicity as possible to these efforts. There is a great deal going behind the scenes and it is important that as many as possible are aware that the matter is not absolutely decided. Our bishops may have given up but the laity definitely has not. If we can get up a head of steam – and more than a few prayers – one never knows what might happen.

I am off to Rome next week and I hope to have the opportunity to discuss this in the curia. If the bishops can be persuaded that the way forward is a seminary that teaches Latin (in accordance with canon law) and both forms of the Mass then it might just create a revival as is happening in other countries around the world. Hope springs eternal.

It is hoped that we will have a Missa Cantata at Oulton Abbey on Oct. 24th at 3 pm.

LMS News - Summer School and November Confirmations

Yesterday the LMS issued a press release announcing the success of the sixth Catholic Summer School (www.stcatherinestrust.org) recently. It is available for viewing and as one who has taught on two of the Schools I readily endorse the value and importance of such opportunities for the Catholic young in this day and age.

There has also been a reminder from HQ about children and adults wishing to be confirmed in the traditional rite at St. James', Spanish Place, London, in November. Pictures of last year's confirmandi with the Bishop are available on the LMS website.

No Masses at CHeadle Aug. 29 and Sept. 19

There were tentative suggestions for Masses on these dates but in fact there will not be a Mass at Cheadle on either 29 Aug. or 19 Sept. The latter date of course is when Pope Benedict celebrates Mass in Birmingham and Cardinal Newman will be beatified.

Masses in August, Sept. & October

There will be Masses (Low, and perhaps the introduction of occasional Missa Cantata) every Sunday at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph's, Burslem near Stoke-on-Trent. There is also weekday Mass (Low) from Monday to Friday at St. Joseph's at 7 . 30 a.m. On Thursday evenings there is a Holy Hour with Benediction at 7 p.m.

The next Missa Cantata at Oulton Abbey near Stone is provisionally on Sept. 26. Provisionally there is a 3 p.m. Mass at St. Giles, Cheadle on 29 August, but please check beforehand unless confirmed later. Also at St. Giles, very provisionally, at 9 a.m. on Sept. 19 (as the Holy Father's Mass in Birmingham is at 10 a.m. and will be televised live, at least on EWTN, #SKY Channel 589).

Sunday 15 August 2010

Low Mass 7 pm - Aug 20 Wolstanton

There will be a Low Mass on Friday evening, Aug. 20, at 7 pm., at St. Wulstan's Church, Wolstanton. Our thanks to Fr. Dykes.

I would like to mention that I was at Downside Abbey during the week attending the Priests' Training Conference, the sixth such organised by the LMS. There, I was privileged to meet Bishop Athanasius Schneider of Kazakhstan, author of the important little book Dominus Est - It Is The Lord. He is a fine, humble priest and a truly remarkable bishop.

Saturday 7 August 2010

New Masses 13 & 15 August

The Missa Cantata proposed for 8th. August will now be celebrated at 3 p.m. at Oulton Abbey on 15 Aug., the Feast of the Assumption. Unfortunately our regular young server Josephmarie Dulston will not be assisting Fr. Howell as his family are moving to Reading where his father will take up a post at the Oratory School. It has been great to have their support over several years and we echo the thanks and blessings given by Fr. Dykes at the First Friday Mass at Wolstanton.

In response to an appeal by the LMS nationwide a (Low) Mass Offered for the Success of the Holy Father's Visit will be celebrated at 7 pm, Friday August 13th., at St. Wulstan's, Wolstanton.

Following on from the Message of July 12th., please check before venturing out for any Sunday Mass not at St. Joseph's, Burslem over the next three months. Incidentally an article on the Friars and their Order is in the current (Aug.) issue of the monthly Catholic Life.

New LMS WALSINGHAM WALK. Please check the national website for details of a forthcoming 2-day walking Traditional Pilgrimage to Walsingham. Alternatively details can be obtained from the organiser Paul Smeaton at paul.smeaton@hotmail.co.uk

Monday 12 July 2010

Focus on St. Joseph's, Burslem

From early August there will be a change to the usual pattern of Masses for the area. Thanks to the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, under Fr. Agnellus Murphy, there is now a regular parish Mass in the Old Rite each Sunday at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph's, Burslem, near Stoke-on-Trent. As this has proved very popular with the 'regulars' of the 3 p.m. Masses, the demand for these Masses is signficantly reduced. There is low Mass each weekday (not Saturday) at 7. 30 a.m. at St. Joseph's as well as a Holy Hour with Benediction each Thursday evening at 7.

It is hoped that a monthly Missa Cantata will be held at Oulton Abbey still at 3 p.m. This will probably be on the third Sunday of the month. Please check to confirm these Masses if travelling. Our thanks to Rev. Dame Benedicta OSB and Fr. Howell, and to Beryl Terry, organist and schola organiser.

Also news of a joyous forthcoming event for altar-server Josephmaria Dulston. He is to be confirmed int he Traditional Rite on July 31 at Northampton Cathedral.

Saturday 12 June 2010

Last Minute Cancellation: No Mass at Stone on Sunday 13th

Unfortunately the Sung Mass at Stone has had to be cancelled at the last minute. The 6pm Low Mass at Burslem will now be the only Mass in the North Staffs area this Sunday.

Friday 4 June 2010

At short notice, there will be a Low Mass, possibly a Missa Cantata, at 7 p.m. at St. Wulstan's Church, Wolstanton for the Feast of ther Sacred Heart next Friday evening, 11th. June
